Cheile Turzii (Turda Gorge)

A 2.9 km limestone gorge cut by the Hășdate river about 6 km west of Turda and about 25 km south of Cluj-Napoca, with walls up to about 300 m. It is one of Romania's historic climbing areas: hundreds of single-pitch sport routes plus multipitch lines, most of the older ones protected by pitons with bolted belays, and only a handful equipped in modern sport style. You reach the gorge on foot along the tourist path from the campsites at either end, at Petreștii de Jos in the west or on the Cheia/Mihai Viteazu side in the east, and pay a small entry fee; approaches to the walls take 10 to 30 minutes. Spring and autumn are the best seasons; summer can be very hot on the south-facing walls.

Vaja con Dios (Memorial Cristi Sândean)

A short modern sport line up the middle of Cheile Turzii's biggest wall, between the classic peg routes Jenci Bacsi and Ave Maria. Small holds and a slightly dusty face lead to a closely bolted 7a crack-and-face crux and a big undercling traverse under a roof. Four pitches, then abseil, or carry on up Bulinel to the top.
