The route

Overview

Wöitroas is the longest climb on the Ewige Wand, the south-facing limestone wall of the Predigstuhl above Bad Goisern. It is about 270 m in plaisir style, with good climbing broken up by scrambly and wooded sections. One passage is UIAA 6/6+ and one is 6; the rest is easier, and only 5- is obligatory. bergsteigen.com describes it as extremely well bolted, but the route is recent and not yet cleaned by traffic. Approach and walk-off are 20 min each, so it works as a half-day route.

Getting there

Approach

To the parking

Bad Goisern, Upper Austria. At the roundabout by the Hofer supermarket on the B145 follow signs for Lasern / Wurmstein / Predigstuhl and drive the toll-free panorama road (about 5.7 km) to the large free car park at Predigstuhl (973 m). Public transport: train to Bad Goisern, then taxi.

On foot · about 20 min

20 min, about 40 m of ascent. From the Predigstuhl car park pass the Lesehotel on its right and take the hiking trail about 50 m up to a forest road. Follow the road to its end near the Ewige Wand, then a path through the forest to the signboard at the start of 'Reise durchs gelobte Land' (start at 975 m). Wöitroas begins immediately left of it.

Getting down

Descent

Walk off, about 20 min. From the top go right on the marked Höhenweg for about 4 min to the Radsteig. Descend the Radsteig, which has a short, steep cable-protected rock section, to the foot of the wall. Turn left to return to the car park, or right along the wall base to get back to the start.

Retreat

Bailing off the route

Bail not documented

Retreat is not documented. The only description (bergsteigen.com) gives a 20 minute walk-off from the top and does not mention abseiling, the belay equipment or any escape. The route has scrambly and wooded sections between the climbing, but no source says whether you can get off the wall from them.

Carry
Not documented. The listed rope is a single 50 m, which would limit any abseil to 25 m, and pitch lengths are not published openly.
Basis
Stated in the sourcesbergsteigen.com, the only source for this route, describes a walk-off and makes no mention of retreat, abseiling or belay hardware; no escapes from the wooded sections are assumed here because nothing confirms them.

Safety

Hazards

  • The route is recent and not yet climbed clean: bergsteigen.com asks you to climb attentively despite the many bolts. Wear a helmet.
  • Scrambly and wooded sections between the climbing; the source asks for long quickdraws to manage the rope line.
  • Pitch 2 shares its start with 'Reise durchs gelobte Land'. Branch right at the 4th bolt (blue lettering) or you will follow the wrong route.
  • The Radsteig descent has a short, steep cabled section; sure-footedness needed.

Worth knowing

Tips

  • The UIAA 6/6+ and 6 passages are single spots; the obligatory grade is only 5-.
  • From the foot of the Radsteig you can walk right along the wall base back to the start for a second route, for example 'Reise durchs gelobte Land' (5-).
  • Per-pitch grades are only on the members' topo at bergsteigen.com.

Open questions

Where sources disagree

  • Only bergsteigen.com describes Wöitroas (info dated 7 May 2020). The alpenvereinaktiv page covers the neighbouring route and was used to cross-check parking, approach and the walk-off.
  • Pitch count is not stated outright. Photo captions run up to a 9th pitch at the top, which fits the 9 listed here.
  • Descent time: 20 min (bergsteigen.com) against 40 min on alpenvereinaktiv for the neighbouring route's walk-off, which goes over the Radsteigkopf.
  • Per-pitch grades and lengths are not published openly. Only the crux location (pitch 3) comes from the source.
