Furka

Switzerland

The granite towers above the Furka Pass, on the border of Uri and Valais, give some of the best alpine rock in Switzerland. Most of it needs a rack, but the Hannibalturm, a free-standing pillar beside the Sidelen glacier, carries several fully bolted sport routes. You walk in from the pass road (Furkablick or the Sidelenbach bus stop) in about an hour and a quarter, or stay at the Sidelenhütte, open from late June to early October. The pass road is open only in summer and the climbing is at 2700 to 2900 m.

Conquest of Paradise

The classic of the Hannibalturm: six short, wandering pitches of slab, quartz veins, cracks and a 6a+ slab crux on perfect high-mountain granite at 2800 m. A bench and a bus-stop sign wait on the summit. Very popular, so expect company.
