Gastein (Hohe Tauern)

Austria

The Gastein valley cuts south into the Hohe Tauern from the Salzach valley in Salzburg province. In the Kötschachtal, a side valley just outside Bad Gastein, the Große and Kleine Himmelwand rise above the valley floor and carry long bolted slab routes. You park at the valley entrance near the Grüner Baum hotel and walk in along a forest road in half an hour. The south-facing walls dry quickly and are climbable from about April to October once spring avalanches have come down.
