Monte Argentario

Italy

Monte Argentario is a rocky promontory on the southern coast of Tuscany, joined to the mainland by sandbars near Orbetello. The climbing is on white and grey limestone with pockets, drips and concretions, on south-facing cliffs above the sea at Capo d'Uomo and the Canne d'Organo, with views to Giglio, Giannutri and Montecristo. Porto Santo Stefano is the base; accommodation is expensive in season. The walls are in the sun all day, so spring and autumn are best and summer needs a dawn start.

Spigolo Bonatti

A long arête that seems to drop straight into the sea: a sustained 6a first pitch, then corners, slabs and short walls at 5a to 5b+ separated by easy scrambling, with an exposed traverse out on the open face near the top. The 6a can be aided.
