Rock la kasbar

Paroi des Sources · Taghia · Morocco

Easy to bailBolting confidence: high

A new, well-bolted line on the Paroi des Sources with two excellent pitches of 6c+ and 6c in its upper half. The rock is still fresh and sharp, and the first ascensionists' grades are friendly by Taghia standards. Short approach and shade make it a good first day.

The route

Overview

Rock la kasbar is one of the newest routes on the Paroi des Sources, the wall above the springs ten minutes from the gîtes. It has its own first two pitches, borrows the poor grade 5 link pitch of Classe Montagne Épinal, then climbs two fine pitches of 6c+ and 6c on new rock. The new equipment ends at the fifth belay. From there you either abseil or carry on by a 6c pitch shared with Anzar N Tafouyt and the last pitch of Le Rêve d'Aïcha to walk off. The obligatory grade is given as 6a+.

Getting there

Approach

To the parking

From Marrakech go via Azilal to Zaouiat Ahansal: about 250 km and 5 to 6 hours, on tarmac throughout. From Zaouiat you walk up to Taghia or, since 2023, the gîtes can drive you up a track by 4x4. The gîtes in Taghia (Saïd's and Mohamed Amil's are the ones named in reports) offer half board and can arrange the taxi from Marrakech.

On foot · about 15 min

10 to 15 minutes from the gîtes: walk to the springs, cross them and take the small path to the foot of the Paroi des Sources. Camptocamp places the start just above the start of 'la via', without further detail; ask at the gîtes, where the topo is kept.

Getting down

Descent

Either abseil from the fifth belay: a June 2026 party reports that all the belays are linked for abseiling. Or continue to the top and walk off as for Le Rêve d'Aïcha: go left (facing the wall) along cairned ledges, which the same party describes as neither technical nor exposed.

Retreat

Bailing off the route

Easy to bail

A June 2026 party reports that all the belays are linked if you want to abseil, and abseiling from the fifth belay is one of the two normal ways down.

Safety

Hazards

  • New rock, sharp on the fingers.
  • The link pitch has fractured rock.
  • Above the fifth belay you are on older routes; camptocamp warns that top belays on this wall are sometimes damaged.
  • There is no mountain rescue service in Morocco.

Conditions

The Paroi des Sources tops out at about 2,200 m. Camptocamp gives this route a south to south-west aspect, but a June 2026 party climbed the whole route in the shade from an 08:00 start, finishing at 13:00, when it was already hot in the sun. Dated ascents are from October, May and June.

Worth knowing

Tips

  • A good warm-up route for a first day: short approach, shade, friendly grades.
  • Allow about 5 hours to the top.

Open questions

Where sources disagree

  • Extent of the route: camptocamp lists 7 pitches to the top of the wall, but a June 2026 party says the new route itself ends at the fifth belay and that you continue by other routes. The record follows the 7-pitch description.
  • Aspect and shade: camptocamp gives S and SW for this route while the wall is described elsewhere as west facing and shady in the morning; the one timed report had shade until 13:00.
  • Quality is marked 'medium' in the camptocamp field, which describes the completeness of the page, not the climbing.

Au nom de la Réforme

The classic first route at Taghia: steep, water-sculpted red limestone on the west face of the Taoujdad, with a 6c third pitch that is 6b until a short crux below the belay. It is better bolted than most Taghia routes and correspondingly popular, so some pitches are polished.

Five pitches on new, very rough red rock just right of Au nom de la Réforme. The first three are steep, fingery and continuous with one short crux each; the last two are much easier. The original grades are 7a+, 7a and 6c+, now widely thought generous, and the cruxes are bolted closely enough to pull through.

Dans les Yeux d'Hervé

Seven pitches of compact grey water-pocketed wall high above the mouth of the Verdon gorge, with a view over the Lac de Sainte-Croix.
