The route

Overview

Important: this route is not in Crete. Zobolo is a limestone crag on Cape Maleas in Laconia, at the south-eastern tip of the Peloponnese, near Neapoli (Vatika) and the village of Agios Nikolaos; they are not the Cretan towns of the same names. The route, listed as 'Tou Laou' at West Zobolo, is a four-pitch, 135 m line on the tall left-hand part of the crag: a short corner and slab, steep walls, a ramp, and a fine last pitch with a juggy steep crux. It is even in difficulty (5b to 5c+), very well bolted, has sea views, and you abseil the route.

Getting there

Approach

To the parking

Base is Neapoli (Laconia, Peloponnese), reached from Athens via Sparta, or from Leonidio via Geraki and Molai. From Neapoli drive towards Agios Nikolaos, then towards Profitis Ilias. About 5 km after Agios Nikolaos take a wide dirt road on the left signed to the 'Fossil Forest' (under works in summer 2021, possibly to be surfaced). After about 2 km a small dirt road leaves left at a big boulder with a 'climbing park' sign; the parking is a little further on, about 1 km before the fossil forest. Mountain Project gives the parking at 36.44066, 23.1306. Neapoli is about 15 km and 30 min from the crag.

On foot · about 10 min

About 10 min. An obvious path marked with red dots leads from the parking to the first sector; Mountain Project gives 15-25 min for the cliff as a whole. West Zobolo, with the multipitch routes, is the far left (west) end of the part of the crag visible from the parking, left of the Aspra, Ekpedeftikes and Protos Tihos sectors. Route names are painted at the foot of the cliff.

Getting down

Descent

Abseil the route from the belays, each of which has two bolts with an abseil ring on each (not linked). Camptocamp specifies a 70 m rope and pitches of 30-35 m; no source gives the abseil lengths, so knot the rope ends.

Retreat

Bailing off the route

Easy to bail

Yes. Abseiling the route is the normal descent, and every belay has two bolts with an abseil ring on each. The rings are not linked, so thread both or equalise them. No trouble is reported, though only one logged ascent was found.

Retreat from
Any of the four belays. At the top of P1 there are two belays 3 m apart. The top belay is hanging.
Carry
1×70 m rope. Pitches are 30 to 35 m, so a 70 m rope is at its limit on some abseils. Knot the ends. Slings to link the belay bolts.
Basis
Part stated, part inferredCamptocamp states the route is abseiled from ringed belays with a 70 m rope; the warning about the rope being at its limit is inferred from the pitch lengths, as no abseil lengths are published.

Partly inferred from the route facts

Safety

Hazards

  • Belay bolts are not linked; each has its own ring, so equalise them yourself for belaying and abseiling.
  • The last belay is hanging and uncomfortable.
  • Two belays close together at the top of pitch 1: take the upper one.
  • Mountain Project notes that bolts at Zobolo can be further apart than at Leonidio or Kyparissi, though camptocamp calls this route very well bolted.
  • Remote: no water at the crag, and often windy.
  • Only one logged ascent (June 2021) was found, so recent condition is unconfirmed; some vegetation on pitches 1 and 2.

Sun and weather

Conditions

Camptocamp lists the route as west-facing and says the western part of the crag gets the sun from about 11:00. climbgreece.com says the main cliff from West Zobolo to Protos Tihos faces mostly south-east and is in the sun roughly 11:00-18:00, so it is best from November to April and in spring and autumn; in summer use the shaded sectors (Hioni in the morning, East Zobolo after 14:00) instead. The cape is often windy.

Worth knowing

Tips

  • Allow about 2 h 30 for the route (2021 party).
  • West Zobolo has four or five multipitch routes; Kipouros (5 pitches, 6a+) at its right-hand end is the other one with a published trip report.
  • Stay in Neapoli (most accommodation), or in Agios Nikolaos about 5 km from the crag; there is camping near Rizmari beach.
  • The petrified forest and small beaches near Agios Nikolaos are a few minutes away.

Open questions

Where sources disagree

  • Location: not Crete (Lasithi). Camptocamp, climbgreece.com, Mountain Project and 27crags all place Zobolo on Cape Maleas, Laconia, southern Peloponnese. Neapoli and Agios Nikolaos here are the Laconian ones.
  • Name: 'Zobolo tou Laou' on camptocamp's Spanish page and in this entry; 'Tou Laou' on the French page and on climbgreece.com's route list for West Zobolo.
  • Aspect: west (camptocamp route page) vs mostly south-east for the main cliff (climbgreece.com). Both agree the sun arrives around 11:00.
  • Approach: 10 min (camptocamp) vs 15-25 min (Mountain Project).
  • Mountain Project's West Zobolo page does not list this route.
  • Season: climbgreece.com says the main cliff including West Zobolo is ideal from November to April (in the sun 11:00-18:00), wider than the March to May and October to November listed here.
