Baou de Saint-Jeannet

France

The Baou de Saint-Jeannet is the 800 m limestone bluff that rises straight above the village of Saint-Jeannet, in the hills behind Nice, and is the main multipitch cliff of the Côte d'Azur with about 50 long routes on its 200 m south-west face. You park at the entrance to the village, walk through it, and reach the routes in 20 to 30 minutes. The face is in the sun from about midday, so it is at its best from autumn to spring. Bolting standards vary a lot from route to route; many older lines are spaced or need gear. A waymarked path leads down from the summit.

Jardins secrets

One of the essential long routes of the Baou: seven pitches that hardly drop below the sixth grade, each with a different problem, from thin slab to a steep bulge and a superb layback corner at 6c. The single 7a section on pitch 2 is closely bolted and can be aided. Expect a few loose blocks and a scrappy link pitch across the Vernet ledge.
