Bail with caveatsBolting confidence: high

A mountain-style outing high above Masouri, with a delicate traversing 6a on P4 and a lovely final corner. Most pitches feel easy for their grade, but the route is loose in places, so wear a helmet.

The route

Overview

A recent seven-pitch route high above Masouri in the Olympic Wall area, starting from the Space Terrace just right of the fixed rope that gives access to it. It has a mountain feel: a long approach, ledges between pitches, a line that moves right, then left, then right again, and a walk-off down a gully. The climbing is mostly easy for the grade, with a delicate leftward traverse on pitch 4 and a good final corner as the two 6a pitches. Bolting is very generous, but the rock is loose in places.

P15b25 mUp to a ledge, then move about 10 m right along it.
P25b+20 mStraight up over a few steps and a small slab.
P35c+20 mA little more technical. A UKC comment describes it as trending up and left and only about 15 m.
P46a20 mTraverse left. Delicate and very good.
P55+30 mBack right. One harder move, then easy. The camptocamp grade is garbled ('5|+'); it is read here as 5c+.
P65b30 mRight again to a ledge.
P76a25 mThe final corner, very good. There are chains at the top; a 2025 UKC comment suggests continuing past them to belay on single bolts in a safer position.

Getting there

Approach

To the parking

Base: Masouri. Walk or ride 1.5 km along the road towards Kastelli, then go up to the isolated house under the electricity pylons and follow the stone wall beside it to the scooter parking used for Odyssey. An hourly bus runs between Pothia and Kastelli.

On foot · about 45 min

From the scooter parking take the blue-marked path up to Odyssey. Level with Odyssey turn right and contour, cross the ravine, and at four large cairns (the Odyssey / Iliada / Olympic Wall junction) go uphill following red marks, cairns and big green dots. Traversing left brings you to the wall and a fixed rope. The route starts just right of that fixed rope; a 2024 UKC comment puts the first bolts 1 m right of it. About 45 min from Masouri, 30 min from the scooter parking.

Getting down

Descent

Walk off: go right from the top, then down the gully (cairns and a fixed rope) to return to the Space Terrace and the start. A 2024 party called it quick. Abseiling the route is not recommended because of loose stones.

Retreat

Bailing off the route

Bail with caveats

You can abseil off, but camptocamp advises against it because of loose stones. The line also moves right, then left, then right again, so abseils will not follow the pitches neatly. The intended way off is to finish and walk down the gully.

Retreat from
Not described pitch by pitch. Belays are either chains with fixed karabiners or a line of three bolts, and there are ledges between pitches. Pitch 1 ends with a 10 m move right along a ledge and pitch 4 is a leftward traverse, so expect diagonal abseils (inference).
Point of no return
None is documented. By inference, from R6 only the final 25 m corner remains and the walk-off starts at the top.
Carry
No source gives a rope length. Listed pitches are up to 30 m and reported as shorter in practice, so a 60 m rope should reach belay to belay (inference). Carry maillons and cord for the belays that are just three bolts.
Basis
Part stated, part inferredCamptocamp states that abseiling is not recommended because of loose stones, and UKC comments state the belay types; the effect of the traverses, the rope length and the gear to carry are inferred.

Partly inferred from the route facts

Safety

Hazards

  • Loose rock in places: camptocamp advises against abseiling because of loose stones, a 2024 party says some holds need testing, and a 2025 UKC comment calls it mountain-style and loose in places. Wear a helmet and keep the belayer out of the fall line.
  • Belays vary: some have chains and fixed karabiners, others are just a line of three bolts (UKC, 2025).
  • The descent gully and the access to the terrace use fixed ropes. Check their condition before weighting them.
  • The approach is long and the route sits high on the hillside, so help is a long way off. All rescue on Kalymnos and Telendos is volunteer-run and there is no state helicopter medical service (ExplorersWeb, April 2026). Treat a walk-off route on a remote face accordingly.

Sun and weather

Conditions

The route itself is listed as south-west facing and was in shade until about 11:30 in early October 2024, then very hot in the sun. The main Olympic Wall nearby is described differently (sun from about 14:30, somewhat exposed to north-west wind), so do not rely on the wall's shade times for this route. Quiet because of the longer walk. Spring and autumn.

Worth knowing

Tips

  • Pitches are reported as much shorter than the guidebook lengths, so the route is less than the nominal 170 m.
  • A 2024 party simul-climbed the first two pitches to the ledge.
  • Apart from the two 6a pitches the climbing is reported as easy for the grade.
  • Allow about 4 h on the route (2024 party) and start early to climb in the shade.

Open questions

Where sources disagree

  • Pitch 5 grade is garbled on camptocamp ('5|+ 30 m'). It may be 5+ or 5c+. UKC gives the range of pitch grades as 5b to 6a.
  • Pitch lengths: camptocamp gives 25, 20, 20, 20, 30, 30, 25 m (170 m). UKC commenters say several pitches are much shorter than published, and that the guidebook prints one pitch as 40 m, which does not match the camptocamp list.
  • Aspect: camptocamp tags the route SW with morning shade; its Olympic Wall crag page says N with sun from 14:30. The route is on the Space Terrace side, not the main wall, so this entry follows the route page and the 2024 report.
  • The UKC logbook page could not be read in full; its description and comments were seen in search summaries only. That leaves camptocamp as the only source read in full.

Wings for Life

The first route on the wall (Odermatt and Keller, 2008), climbing a long, exposed line on sharp, grippy rock right of the huge roof. The lower pitches are easy for the grade. The two 6a cruxes are a short odd corner over a small roof and a traverse high up, and they come with big exposure. Pitches are short, so you can link them with long draws.

Wild Country

A sustained, varied line on sculpted limestone. It starts with an easy slab and builds to slightly overhanging jugs with huge exposure on the top pitch. Mountain Project and camptocamp grade the crux 6a+ (Rockfax says 6a). With a 70 m rope you can link several pairs of pitches.

3 Stripes

Kalymnos's best-known introduction to multi-pitch: a series of steps and slabs, always with plenty of holds, finishing on top of the Grande Grotta. The upper pitches feel very exposed. Real pitch lengths are shorter than the guidebook says (20–25 m).

Thin moves over small bulges, stemming and big jugs on 'cauliflower' limestone. The crux is P6, which ends at a hanging belay. Mountain Project gives the pitches in YDS only (5.8–5.10b), so French pitch grades are not listed; the overall grade is 5.10b (6a+), and some listings give 6b. You can link P3–P4 and P5–P6.
