A short sea-cliff route above the water near Acquafredda: four abseils down, then four pitches back up. A juggy pillar leads to a red wall with two harder sections (6a+), a technical grey corner and an airy arête, and a short traverse on very sharp rock to finish.

New stainless bolting, but the route is documented only by the opener, and the abseil approach means you must climb out.

Overview

Oceano di silenzio was the first route on the stretch of sea cliff between Acquafredda and Sapri. You abseil four times from the coastal path to a stance near the water, then climb four pitches back up: a juggy pillar, a red wall with two harder sections (the 6a+ crux), a technical corner and an airy arête on grey rock, and a short, sharp traverse to the abseil point. The opener describes it as fully bolted with stainless PLX bolts on good to excellent rock, graded S2 for protection. It is short (82 m), but the position above the sea is spectacular. Because you abseil in, you must be able to climb the 6a+ pitch to get out.

Worth knowing

  • Use the opener's coordinates for the car park.
  • The abseil sling is on the sea side of the rocky pulpit and hard to see at first.
  • The neighbouring route Il Mare d'Inverno (6a, 5 pitches), about 15 m to the left, needs threads and some extra protection, so it is not a quickdraw-only route.

Pitch by pitch

The atlas doesn't show topos: they are the work of the people who bolt and document these routes. See the topo in Malopasso - Arrampicate e vie ferrate in Campania e dintorni.

Approach

To the parking

From Maratea drive to the hamlet of Acquafredda, then north towards Sapri on the SS18 Tirrena Inferiore. Go through a tunnel and pass below a big band of cliffs; about where it ends, at the exit of a tunnel under construction, park on the left by the tourist sign 'Benvenuti nella Costa di Maratea' (40.04208, 15.64672). Road works on the SS18 may change the layout, which is why the opener gives the coordinates.

On foot · about 5 min

About 5 min. From the car park climb over the low wall and go down a short bank towards the sea. Cairns lead to the well-marked path 'Apprezzami l'asino'. Follow it towards Acquafredda for a few tens of metres to a small rocky pulpit on the right with the route name. The abseil sling is on the sea side and is not immediately visible. Make four abseils on a doubled 70 m rope to the foot of the route.

Descent

No descent: the route finishes at the abseil point beside the path, a few minutes from the car park.

Bailing off the route

Committing

You reach the route by four abseils from the top, so once the ropes are pulled the way out is to climb the four pitches. The belays are bolted, but abseiling further only takes you towards the sea. If in doubt, leave a rope fixed on the abseils (inferred), or do not go down.

Retreat from
Nowhere useful once you are at the bottom: every belay leads down towards the water.
Point of no return
Pulling the abseil rope at the foot of the route.
Carry
The ability to climb 6a+ (or aid it on the bolts); a fixed line or prusiks if you want an escape (inferred).
Basis
Inferred from the route factsThe opener describes the abseil approach and the climb back up; the consequences for retreat are inferred from that.

Hazards

  • You abseil in, so the only way out is to climb the route, including the 6a+ pitch, unless you leave a rope fixed (inferred). The opener advises the route only for parties who can climb the obligatory grade and handle multipitch rope work, and otherwise recommends a mountain guide.
  • The foot of the route is close to the sea; rough sea or swell could make the lower stance unpleasant (inferred).
  • The rock on the last pitch is very sharp: protect the rope and your hands.
  • S2 protection: the bolts are sound stainless steel, but not always closely spaced.
  • Road works on the SS18 may change the car park.

Gear

Bolts and history

Bolting
Fully equipped by the opener in May 2023 with stainless-steel PLX bolts and belays, paid for by the opener himself. He gives the protection as S2 on the Italian scale, so the bolts are not always close. The abseil approach uses the same belays. Only the opener documents the route.
History
Opened from above by Riccardo Quaranta on 21 and 22 May 2023, after scouting the cliff with drone images from Johnny Montesano. First redpoint by Riccardo Quaranta and Carlo Magnabosco on 23 May 2023. The opener paid for all the equipment. One of the opener's photos is captioned as a dedication to Franco Battiato, whose song 'L'oceano di silenzio' shares the name.
Guidebook
The 2023 (4th) edition of 'Malopasso' (Oreste Bottiglieri, Versante Sud) covers Maratea; whether it includes this route is not confirmed. Buy from versantesud.it.

Where sources disagree

  • Single source: all the route information comes from the opener, published on his blog (June 2023) and on planetmountain (June 2024). No independent topo or detailed trip report was found.
  • Obligatory grade: the opener gives 6a+. A Gulliver logbook entry of 30 April 2024 (seen only through a search index, because the site blocks direct access) suggests 5c+ is more realistic.
  • Rock type is not stated by the route sources; limestone is inferred from the geology of the Maratea coast (Italian Wikipedia: dolomitic limestone, red bare limestone walls).
  • Planetmountain files the route under 'Appennino Centrale – Sperlonga', which is an error: the route is in Basilicata.
