Maratea

Maratea is Basilicata's short stretch of Tyrrhenian coast, where steep cliffs drop straight into the sea between the hamlet of Acquafredda and Sapri. Multipitch climbing here is very recent: since 2023 the mountain guide Riccardo Quaranta has opened a few lines on the sea cliffs north of Acquafredda, reached by abseiling in from the coastal path 'Apprezzami l'asino' just below the SS18 coast road. The opener describes the rock as good to excellent, and very sharp on the last pitch. Base yourself in Acquafredda or Maratea; you need a car. The cliffs face south-west, so spring and autumn are best, and in summer only a dawn or late-afternoon start works.

Oceano di silenzio

A short sea-cliff route above the water near Acquafredda: four abseils down, then four pitches back up. A juggy pillar leads to a red wall with two harder sections (6a+), a technical grey corner and an airy arête, and a short traverse on very sharp rock to finish.
