We Salute You

Kokkinovrachos – Hospital / Red Rock (about 50 m right of Aghios Lemmy) · Leonidio & Kyparissi · Greece

Bail with caveatsBolting confidence: high

A short, friendly big-wall route 20 min from the town: six pitches of 5b to 6a+ with bolts never far apart. The first half is slabby and a little vegetated; the last two pitches, a corner and a crack in red rock, are the reason to come. More sustained than the topo suggests.

The route

Overview

We Salute You is the easiest of the multi-pitch routes on the Hospital end of Kokkinovrachos, the eastern part of the great red wall above Leonidio. It gives 185 m of climbing in six pitches with an obligatory grade of 5c, on bolts close enough that it works as a first long route for a confident 6a climber. Parties describe it as nothing exceptional low down but worthwhile for the upper corner and crack. The setting is urban: you climb above the town and hear it all the way up.

Pitches of We Salute You
PitchGradeLengthNotes
P15c30 mA slab and pillar with holds and cracks. In 2023 there was still some earth and vegetation on it. Camptocamp gives 5b/c.
P26a35 mStraight up above the belay; a 2023 party thought 5c+.
P35b15 mA horizontal traverse right to R3, shared with Federer (which leaves up and left). From R3 two abseils reach the ground.
P46a35 mUp and right through a steep section on good holds, a grey slab, then a vertical pillar with the crux to a good ledge.
P56a+35 mUp right to a block, then a fine steep open corner. Camptocamp gives 6a.
P66a+35 mA steep wall following cracks and corners in red rock to the top and the logbook. One well-defined move in the crack is worth 6b if taken direct.

Getting there

Approach

To the parking

Base yourself in Leonidio on the east coast of the Peloponnese. Kokkinovrachos is the red wall directly above the town. The Hospital and Red Rock sectors are reached on foot from the town, about 20 min from the Health Centre. You can also park at the second bend of the road to Vaskina and follow the level track above the town to a water tank, from where a path climbs towards Red Rock.

On foot · about 20 min

20 min. Approach as for Aghios Lemmy: about 50 m before the foot of the Red Rock single pitches take a path going right and follow the foot of the cliff for about 200 m to Aghios Lemmy, whose name is written at the base. We Salute You starts about 50 m further right. Two routes start almost side by side there: take the left-hand one. The right-hand one is Federer.

Getting down

Descent

Either abseil or walk. The guide site gives five abseils from the top to the base, or two from R3 if you stop there. A March 2023 party came down in three abseils with two 60 m ropes, using the line of the route and of the neighbouring Federer, and found it a bit awkward because of vegetation. Alternatively walk up from the top to the dirt road in about 15 min and return to town by the road.

Retreat

Bailing off the route

Bail with caveats

The route is equipped for abseil: two abseils from R3 and five from the top. A 2023 party abseiled with two 60 m ropes and found vegetation made it a little awkward. Pitch 3 is a horizontal traverse, so the abseil line does not simply reverse the climb.

Retreat from
R1 and R2 directly; R3 by the two abseils the guide site mentions; higher belays by the five-abseil line.
Point of no return
None. From the top you can also walk up to the dirt road in 15 min.
Carry
Two ropes (a 2023 party used 2×60 m). Watch for rope snags in vegetation.
Basis
Stated in the sourcesAbseil descent is described by the guide site, by camptocamp and by a 2023 trip report.

Safety

Hazards

  • The guide site warns that some of the Hospital multi-pitches (numbered 1 to 3 on its topo) must not be climbed when climbers are at the single-pitch routes below, because of loose blocks. The online listing does not say which routes carry those numbers, so check the printed topo.
  • Earth and plants on the first pitch, and vegetation that catches abseil ropes.
  • Communication is difficult because of noise from the town.
  • Full sun: too hot on warm days.
  • The local rescue team (Leonidio Fire Department) is not trained for big-wall rescue, as the local guide site points out.

Sun and weather

Conditions

South facing and never in shade; the guide site gives November to March as the best period. On a March day with 16°C forecast a party found it very hot on the wall. Town noise makes it hard to hear your partner even on short, straight pitches. Allow about 3 h.

Worth knowing

Tips

  • Sign the logbook at the top.
  • If time is short, R3 is a natural place to stop: two abseils reach the ground.
  • Start early in spring and autumn; in midwinter the sun is welcome.

Open questions

Where sources disagree

  • Pitch grades: the guide site gives 5c, 6a, 5b, 6a, 6a+, 6a+ (used here); camptocamp gives 5b/c, 6a, 5b, 6a, 6a, 6a+ and notes that a move on the last pitch may be 6b. A 2023 party suggested 5c+ for pitch 2 and 4c for pitch 3.
  • Obligatory grade: 5c (guide site) against 6a (camptocamp).
  • Abseils: five from the top (guide site) against three with 2×60 m ropes via Federer (2023 party).
