Dirty Flirty

Noafer Bichl (Glaning, Bolzano) · Bolzano & South Tyrol · Italy

Bail not documentedBolting confidence: medium

A friendly, well-bolted line up the red porphyry below the Gasthof Noafer, just above Bolzano. Three pitches of steep slab and corner lead to a long shoulder, two easy pitches cross it, and two more fine slab pitches finish at the cliff top. Mostly grade 5 with one 5c pitch, the third, which is the best of the route.

The route

Overview

The Noafer Bichl is the reddish porphyry wall on the hillside of Glaning, a few hundred metres above the western edge of Bolzano. From the valley it looks uninviting, but the climbing is varied. Dirty Flirty runs up the left part of the wall, not far from Sonntagsspaziergang, where a long shoulder divides the face in two. You start by walking down from the inn at the top, so the climb ends a few minutes from the car. It was equipped with the permission of the family who run the Noafer, and the first ascensionists ask climbers to respect the parking arrangements.

Pitches of Dirty Flirty
PitchGradeLengthBoltsNotes
P14a30 m6 boltsEasy ground in a leftward arc to the steep wall directly above the start. UIAA 3+.
P25b35 m10 boltsLeftwards over a marked edge and up a steep corner, then onto slabs that give delightful climbing to the belay. UIAA 5+.
P35c30 m12 boltsThe best pitch. A corner on the right leads steeply up to a slab with few holds but an easier angle. After a few metres it steepens again and a crack takes you onto the top of the big shoulder, with a view over the whole city. UIAA 6-/6.
P44a40 m3 boltsThe first of two linking pitches along the shoulder, mostly walking, marked with short pieces of rope. Keep left at the only bolt on the crest. Trees can be slung for extra protection. One move of UIAA 3+.
P55a35 m2 boltsLeft round the edge and over a short steep slab (one move of UIAA 5-), then along the broader crest again. The way is marked.
P65a+35 m10 boltsEasier climbing diagonally up to the left. UIAA 5/5+.
P75b30 m10 boltsA fine steep slab on big holds, more delicate at its top edge. The angle then eases and the route goes right over slabby ground to a large rock ledge and the exit gully, which leads in a few metres to the top. UIAA 6-.

Getting there

Approach

To the parking

From Bolzano drive towards Jenesien (San Genesio) and follow the signs to Glaning. After about 3.5 km signs lead to the Gasthaus Noafer (775 m). Do not park directly in front of the inn, which needs the spaces for its guests: park a little lower by the pasture or above on the access road. Camping or sleeping in a vehicle at the car park is forbidden. You can also walk up from Bolzano (Moritzing) on path 11B.

On foot · about 30 min

About 30 min, downhill. From the Gasthaus Noafer follow path 11B down, staying on the forest road with concreted wheel tracks. At about 590 m, where trees arch over the track, there is usually a cairn on the right. A steep path starts there and leads in a few minutes towards the start of Sonntagsspaziergang at the rock. Just before the rock, follow a clear path left through the wood to a rock edge, where you can see the bolts of Wintergarten, which starts a little lower. Zigzag up to the right of this edge to the start, marked by a cairn and a sling on a tree; the last part of the path is marked.

Getting down

Descent

On foot, about 15 min. The route tops out at the 'Herzl', an old steel heart beside a ruined hut. From the top go right to the exit of Sonntagsspaziergang, then walk gently uphill above the cliff edge towards the Gasthof Noafer. Descend through the wood to the fence, drop to path 11B and follow it a few steps back to the inn.

Retreat

Bailing off the route

Bail not documented

Retreat is not documented. The normal descent is on foot from the top, and the source does not describe the belays or any abseil line. Pitches are 30 to 40 m, so a single 50 m rope would not reach from belay to belay on an abseil.

Retreat from
Not stated. The long shoulder reached at the top of pitch 3 is mostly walking ground with trees, and Wintergarten and Sonntagsspaziergang run close by, but no source describes a way off it on foot.
Point of no return
Not documented. Above the shoulder only two climbing pitches remain, at 5a+ and 5b.
Carry
Maillons or old karabiners in case you have to lower off or abseil from bolts; a second rope if you want to be able to abseil full pitches.
Basis

Safety

Hazards

  • The two linking pitches (4 and 5) have 3 and 2 bolts in 35 to 40 m. The ground is easy, but protect it with slings on trees.
  • Very hot in summer on windless days.
  • Do not camp or sleep in a vehicle at the Noafer car park, and do not park directly in front of the inn.

Sun and weather

Conditions

South-east to south facing between about 620 and 850 m. Bergsteigen.com shows it as climbable all year, but the south-facing rock gets very hot in summer and is only bearable then on a windy day, so the cooler months are best. Allow 2 h 30 min for the climb and about 3 h 15 min in all.

Worth knowing

Tips

  • Sonntagsspaziergang (4c), just to the right, shares the approach and descent; bergsteigen.com suggests doing both for a full day on porphyry.
  • Wintergarten crosses close by: its fifth belay is a few metres from this route on the shoulder.
  • Stopping at the Gasthof Noafer before or after is the accepted way to thank the family who allow climbing on their land.

Open questions

Where sources disagree

  • Only one detailed source was found (bergsteigen.com, written with one of the first ascensionists), so the grades and bolt counts could not be cross-checked. theCrag lists the crag but blocks automated reading.
  • Bergsteigen.com gives both UIAA and French grades for each pitch; the French grades are used here and the UIAA grades are noted in the pitch descriptions.

Sonntagsspaziergang

The easy classic of the Noafer Bichl: slabs, a neat corner and two pitches up a pocketed pillar edge, with Bolzano below and the Dolomites on the horizon. Grade 4 climbing throughout, but with some long gaps between bolts on the easy ground.

Il Cielo sopra Bolzano

Steep crack, corner and chimney climbing on porphyry, fully bolted in the middle of a trad crag. Sustained at 6a to 6b with a technical 6b+ first pitch. It stays in the shade until mid-afternoon, which makes it a summer option.

Opium fürs Volk

A modern bolted route on grippy, granite-like tonalite high above the Staller Sattel road at the head of the Antholz valley. Six pitches up to 6b lead to a wooded ledge, a walk along it, and two more good pitches on steeper rock to finish. The crux is a crack system through a compact slab on pitch 3; the rest is sustained at 6a.

Regensburg

The friendly long route of Kalymnos: seven short pitches that spiral up the face and slabs right of the crest of a buttress above Arginonta bay, never harder than 5c. A good first pitch, an easy second and a scramble lead to three better pitches on the upper wall. Some parties find the rock scrappy in places, so wear a helmet.

Schöne Aussichten

Vía del Ibón

A mountain-style line on dark, weathered granite twenty-five minutes above the spa of Baños de Panticosa. It links ramps, a short overhanging break, slabs and a rounded boulder, with one well-bolted 5c move and the rest 4b to 5b. The rock between the good sections is earthy and lichenous, but the friction is excellent and the bolting generous.
