Multipitch Atlas

Schöne Aussichten

Hintisberg · Bernese Oberland · Switzerland

Easy to bailBolting confidence: medium

The easiest long route at Hintisberg, seven pitches on the right side of the wall with the Eiger north face directly behind you. Varied limestone that improves with height: the last two pitches, both 5c, are the best and the hardest. Often quieter than Reisefieber next door.

The route

Overview

Schöne Aussichten means 'fine views', and the name is earned: Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau fill the horizon from every stance. The route was opened in 1992 by Christian and Rosemarie Bleuer, who equipped most of the moderate lines on this wall. It runs just right of Reisefieber on the right-hand part of the cliff. Nothing is harder than 5c and 5b is obligatory, which makes it the natural first route here.

Getting there

Approach

To the parking

Leave the Interlaken to Grindelwald road at the Restaurant Stalden, go under the small railway tunnel and follow the toll road all the way up to Alp Hintisberg (1650 m). The toll was 10 CHF, paid at the restaurant, in older reports; camptocamp now mentions a ticket machine about 2 km up the road that takes coins or an app. Continue on the gravel track round a hairpin to the hamlet with the alp restaurant and dormitory, pass it and park 100 to 200 m further on at the marked space with a toilet. Park only there: the alp is farmed.

On foot · about 35 min

Walk back down the track about 60 m to a small water tank and take the marked path towards the cliff, leaving the Faulhorn path at a cairn. About 35 minutes. The route is on the right-hand side of the wall, right of Reisefieber. A 2023 Mountain Project entry places the start below the second overhang feature from the left on the right side of the face, begun either from the ground or after a short scramble.

Getting down

Descent

Abseil the route in four long abseils with 2×50 m. Parties on Reisefieber come down the same line, so expect company.

Retreat

Bailing off the route

Easy to bail

Abseiling the route is the normal descent, in four long abseils from the top, and it is the regular abseil line for this part of the wall. You can retreat from the stances on the line.

Safety

Hazards

  • Bolts are more spaced on the easier sections.
  • Some holds low on the route need testing (2014 report).
  • Seepage at the end of pitch 1 after rain.
  • Shared abseil line with Reisefieber: watch for parties and stonefall from the grassy ledges.

Sun and weather

Conditions

The wall faces south to south-east between about 1900 and 2100 m and dries fast: parties report routes climbable an hour or two after a shower, though seepage lingers in places after heavy storms. It is hot in midsummer even at this height, so some parties wait for the afternoon shade. The season runs from late spring to autumn, and the toll road is kept in good condition.

Worth knowing

Tips

  • A party in 2014 took about 4 h 30 from starting the route to the end of the abseils.
  • The alp restaurant below the wall serves food and has a dormitory.

Open questions

Where sources disagree

  • Length: 180 m on camptocamp, 212 m on Mountain Project.
  • Only one pitch-by-pitch list exists (camptocamp); pitch lengths and bolt counts are not published.
  • The traverse that a 2014 party mentions is not assigned to a pitch by any source, so it is not placed here.

Todi

Four pitches of steep, compact limestone opposite the Eiger: a stiff 6a+ warm-up, a short bouldery 7a crux on small edges, a 6b through little roofs on good holds, and a superb, sustained 7a wall of pockets to finish. Short enough to climb without a pack, and the 7a grades are reckoned friendly.

Switzerland · Bernese Oberland

Reisefieber

The most popular route at Hintisberg: six pitches from the lowest point of the wall, with slabs, a technical wall and small overhangs to turn. It gets better as it rises and ends on a superb wall of pockets, where the obligatory 6a crux lies. Expect a queue on fine weekends.

Switzerland · Bernese Oberland

Blüemlipfad

Six fairly short pitches on the left-hand sector of Hintisberg, left of the big overhangs. The first three are moderate and on less good rock; the upper three are steeper, with the 6a+ crux on small edges on pitch 4, and finish on a grassy top with the whole Bernese Oberland in view. Grades are on the stiff side.

Tintangel

Four pitches of steep, banded limestone left of Zick-Zack. A long opening pitch with big moves leads to the 6b+ crux, which packs a few fierce moves into its start; then come an athletic line through small roofs and a fine wall on small holds. Stiff grading in the Swiss manner.

Dirty Flirty

A friendly, well-bolted line up the red porphyry below the Gasthof Noafer, just above Bolzano. Three pitches of steep slab and corner lead to a long shoulder, two easy pitches cross it, and two more fine slab pitches finish at the cliff top. Mostly grade 5 with one 5c pitch, the third, which is the best of the route.

Greece · Kalymnos & Telendos

Regensburg

The friendly long route of Kalymnos: seven short pitches that spiral up the face and slabs right of the crest of a buttress above Arginonta bay, never harder than 5c. A good first pitch, an easy second and a scramble lead to three better pitches on the upper wall. Some parties find the rock scrappy in places, so wear a helmet.

Vía del Ibón

A mountain-style line on dark, weathered granite twenty-five minutes above the spa of Baños de Panticosa. It links ramps, a short overhanging break, slabs and a rounded boulder, with one well-bolted 5c move and the rest 4b to 5b. The rock between the good sections is earthy and lichenous, but the friction is excellent and the bolting generous.
