A short multi-pitch up the full height of a red wall that drops from the coast road almost into the sea: vertical walls with rough rock, pockets and some laybacking, in the shade all day. Every pitch has real climbing, and the only complaint is that it ends too soon.

A loose hanger at the top belay and a missing bolt were reported in November 2024 with no later update, and the descent is not documented.

The route

Overview

King Albert 1er is the one multi-pitch at Kapsala, a north-east-facing sea cliff between Leonidio and Kyparissi that became accessible when the new coast road opened. It climbs the whole face at its far left end in five short pitches, about 120 m in all, with a hardest pitch of 6b and the rest between 5c and 6a+. Three camptocamp parties rate it highly and all wish it were longer. It is a quiet, shady alternative to the sun-baked walls above Leonidio and combines well with the single pitches of the sector.

PitchGradeNotes
P16aThe first bolt is hard to spot. A 2024 party thought 5c/6a.
P26a+A very fine pitch. In November 2024 the first bolt was missing, on easy ground, and one hanger had been replaced beside a move that the party graded 6b.
P35cAn easier pitch; a 2024 party thought 5b.
P46bA delicate wall with two hard moves.
P56aA fine exit to a hanging belay. Often linked with pitch 4 by skipping two bolts that sit off the line.

Getting there

Approach

To the parking

Kapsala is about 14 km north of Kyparissi on the coast road and roughly an hour's drive south of Leonidio (via Poulithra, Pirgoudi and Fokiano, then the new coast road for about 10 min). Coming from Kyparissi, pass the turning for Kapsala village on your left and stop after the series of wide bends that follows. The cliff lies below the road. A car is needed.

On foot

From the parking follow red paint marks and cairns down to the foot of the cliff; no source gives a time. The route starts at the very bottom, far left end of the wall as you face it, just before a last fixed rope that leads to an alternative 6c first pitch. The first bolt is not easy to see.

Getting down

Descent

No source describes the descent. The top belay is a hanging stance, which suggests abseiling the route, and the cliff top is close to the coast road, but neither option is confirmed. Check the guidebook topo before you start.

Retreat

Bailing off the route

Bail not documented

Neither the normal descent nor retreat is described by any source. The route is only 120 m and five short pitches, with bolted belays, so abseiling from a lower belay is plausible, but the hardware at the stations is not documented and a loose hanger was reported at the top belay in 2024.

Safety

Hazards

  • November 2024: the right-hand hanger of the last belay was moving and its nut was coming undone. Check and back up that anchor.
  • November 2024: the first bolt of pitch 2 was missing. The ground there is easy, but the fall would be onto the belay.
  • Descent undocumented; do not assume the stations are rigged for a single rope.
  • A sea cliff: expect corrosion to be a long-term issue and look at every bolt.
  • Remote: the nearest village is Kyparissi, 14 km away.

Sun and weather

Conditions

North-east facing and in the shade for the whole climb on a November morning (10:00 to 12:30), which makes it one of the few multi-pitches in the region for warm weather. It can be windy. Parties take 2 to 2.5 h.

Worth knowing

Tips

  • Linking pitches 4 and 5 works well if you skip the two bolts that sit off the line.
  • The Hideout sector on the same cliff has the best single pitches (7a to 7b+ on tufas) for afterwards.
  • The beach and tavernas of Kyparissi are about 10 min further south.

Open questions

Where sources disagree

  • Overall grade: 6a+ on camptocamp, 6b on Climb Greece and for two camptocamp parties (2022 and 2024).
  • Pitches: officially five; the camptocamp page lists four (6a, 6a+, 5c, 6a+) because it links the last two. A 2022 party following the printed topo gives 6b for pitch 4 and 6a for pitch 5, used here.
  • Pitch 2: 6a+ on the page, but a 2024 party felt one move by the replaced hanger was 6b.
  • Distance from Kyparissi: 14 km (camptocamp), about 13 km (Mountain Project).
