The route

Overview

Kipouros is a five-pitch sport route on West Zobolo, the tallest part of the Zobolo cliff near the tip of Cape Maleas. It takes the right side of the grey wall at the crag's highest point, where the cliff reaches about 150 m. The climbing is 5a to 6a+ on sharp grey limestone, with 11 to 14 bolts on every pitch according to the developers' topo. A British party in 2019 found the first pitch scrappy and the rest very good, with pitch 5 the best.

Getting there

Approach

To the parking

Drive to Neapoli at the southern end of the Laconian peninsula (from Athens via Sparta; from Leonidio via Geraki and Molai). On the Neapoli seafront turn left at the sign for Agios Nikolaos and Velanidia; Agios Nikolaos is 7 km on. At the entrance to the village turn right onto a sealed road and follow it for about 6.5 km to an unsurfaced road signed for Agia Marina and the climbing area, also the road to the fossil forest. About 2 km along it a sign points to the climbing area and the car park is on the left, roughly a kilometre before the fossil forest. Neapoli has the nearest accommodation and shops; bring all your water.

On foot · about 17 min

A red-marked path leads from the car park to the cliff. The local topo site gives 8 min to the first sector (Protos Toichos) and 17 min to West Zobolo, the far left and highest part of the cliff, where the multipitch routes are. Route names are painted at the base. Kipouros is the right-hand of the multipitch routes.

Getting down

Descent

Not described in detail by any source. The 2019 party reports being up and down in about 3.5 hours, which implies they abseiled the route. On the neighbouring Zobolo tou Laou the belays have two unlinked bolts with a ring each and the descent is by abseil on a 70 m rope.

Retreat

Bailing off the route

Bail not documented

Retreat and descent are not described for this route in any source found. The neighbouring four-pitch Zobolo tou Laou, by the same equipper, is descended by abseiling the route: its belays have two bolts, each with an abseil ring, not linked together. A 2019 party on Kipouros went up and down in about 3.5 hours, which implies the route can be abseiled. It is reasonable to expect similar belays here, but this is not confirmed.

Retreat from

Point of no return
Not documented.
Carry
A 70 m rope (the longest pitch is 35 m or less) or two ropes, plus a couple of maillons and some cord in case a belay is not rigged for abseiling (inferred).

Safety

Hazards

  • Mountain Project notes that bolts at Zobolo can be a little further apart than at Leonidio or Kyparissi.
  • The cape is exposed to strong wind; communication between belays can be difficult.
  • A forest fire reached the Zobolo crag some years ago (the notices on the developers' site date from around 2015). A year later the developers reported that almost all routes had been repeated and no problems with the bolts were found.
  • Remote setting: the last kilometres are on a dirt road and there is no water at the crag.

Sun and weather

Conditions

South-facing sea cliff a few hundred metres from the tip of the cape. The local topo site says the sun reaches West Zobolo at about 12:00 (about 11:00 on the sectors further right). The Monemvasia municipality page recommends the crag all day in winter and only early morning or evening in summer. Cape Maleas is known for wind, and Mountain Project warns the crag can be windy.

What to carry

Gear

14 quickdraws covers the longest bolt count on the developers' topo (14 on pitch 3); take more if you link pitches. Rope length is not stated: no pitch is longer than 30 m, so a 60 m rope should cover the abseils and a 70 m gives margin (inferred). Helmet.

Worth knowing

Tips

  • Pitches 2 and 3 can be run together (about 55 m) if you carry enough quickdraws and your rope allows it.
  • A 2019 party took about 3.5 hours up and down.
  • The first pitch is climbed on its own as a single-pitch 5a/5b.

Open questions

Where sources disagree

  • Pitch 2 length: 25 m on the developers' topo, about 30 m in the 2019 trip report.
  • Pitch 1 grade: 5a (developers' topo), 5 (27crags), 5b (Mountain Project).
  • Pitch 4 grade: 5c on the developers' topo, 5+ on 27crags.
  • Number of multipitch routes on West Zobolo: Mountain Project says four plus a project, the 2019 trip report says five, and the developers' topo lists seven complete ones.
