Western Aragonese Pyrenees (Lizara)

Spain

The Sierra de Bernera rises above the Lizara refuge at the head of the Aragüés del Puerto valley, west of Canfranc. Its south face is a spectacular folded limestone stratum, climbed by a handful of easy routes from the Sendero Límite team. The road from Puente la Reina de Jaca (A-176, then the Aragüés del Puerto road) ends at the refuge at about 1,520 m, which is the natural base. The routes lie between 1,850 and 2,100 m, so this is a summer and early autumn venue.
