Kollerweg

Geierwand, Haiming · Inntal (Haiming Geierwand) · Austria

Easy to bailBolting confidence: high

The easiest worthwhile line on the lower tier of the Geierwand. Most people know only its first pitch as a single-pitch climb, but four more good pitches continue to the big ledge on edges and pockets, with a long traverse and a short chimney in the middle. Mostly around 5a with a few 5c passages.

The route

Overview

Kollerweg climbs the lower tier of the Geierwand to the big ledge, on the right-hand side near Sunset Boulevard. bergsteigen.com describes varied climbing on consistently good holds, mostly edges and pockets, with a long traverse and a short chimney as the highlights. The difficulty is mostly around UIAA 5 with a few passages of 6-, which is about 5c. From the ledge you either abseil or carry on up one of the routes of the upper wall. It is the gentlest full-length outing on this wall and a good first multipitch here.

The climbing

Pitch by pitch

Pitches of Kollerweg
PitchGradeNotes
P1–A steep passage low down; this pitch is popular on its own as a single-pitch climb. Climbers Paradise grades its first pitch 5a+ (25 m).
P2–Easier climbing; the last bolts are on easy ground and easy to miss.
P3–The long traverse.
P4–A short chimney, then a fine upper section to the belay.
P5–An arête, then easy ground to the big ledge. Again, look carefully for the bolts on the easy finish.

Getting there

Approach

To the parking

Haiming lies in the Inn valley at the mouth of the Ötztal in Tyrol. Leave the A12 at Mötz or Ötztal, drive into Haiming and follow the 'Rafting-Center' signs. Turn right straight after the bridge over the Inn and continue past the rafting centre to the car park with the large Klettersteig board, at about 660 m. By public transport take the train to Haiming and a bus to the Innbrücke stop.

On foot · about 15 min

15 to 20 min. From the car park follow the Klettersteig signs towards the motorway and cross it. On the far side go a few steps left along the track to a rockfall net, then take the path uphill to the rock. Under the wall put your helmet on and go right, past Sunset Boulevard. Kollerweg is right of Montania and Copacabana and is marked with a plate and a bolt.

Getting down

Descent

The route ends on the big ledge. Abseil with a single 70 m rope; bergsteigen.com advises switching to the Sunset Boulevard line from half-height. It allows about 15 min. Alternatively continue up Sunset Boulevard or Alhambra (both about 6a+) to the top of the wall and walk down.

Retreat

Bailing off the route

Easy to bail

Abseiling from the ledge is the normal descent and a single 70 m rope is enough. bergsteigen.com advises moving onto the Sunset Boulevard abseil line from half-height.

Safety

Hazards

  • Rockfall: loose stones lie on the ledges and terraces and are easily knocked off, especially when you pull ropes. Climbers Paradise asks for extreme care whenever other parties are on the wall. Wear a helmet from the foot of the wall.
  • The bolts on the easy ground at the end of pitches 2 and 5 are easy to overlook.
  • Parties abseil and climb on neighbouring lines that share the same ledge; expect company at weekends.
  • South wall in full sun: very hot in summer.

Sun and weather

Conditions

South facing, with the base at about 740 m and the top of the wall at about 1050 m. bergsteigen.com shows a season from March to November and Climbers Paradise calls the wall climbable almost all year, but both warn that it is very hot in summer. Spring and autumn are the best times. For this route bergsteigen.com extends the season to February.

Worth knowing

Tips

  • At the top you can add the last two pitches of the new route Silberrücken; in 2025 they were still rather sandy.
  • Combined with the upper half of Alhambra or Sunset Boulevard, Kollerweg gives a full-height route with nothing harder than 6a+.
  • bergsteigen.com gives UIAA 5 (about 5a) as the obligatory grade and 1.5 h for the climbing.

Open questions

Where sources disagree

  • Number of pitches: bergsteigen.com describes the first pitch plus four more and its photo captions run to a fifth pitch, giving five; the Climbers Paradise table lists four pitches (5a+, 4c, 5b, 5a+, 25 m each, 100 m). Five is used here and the pitch grades are left out because the two sources cannot be matched pitch for pitch.
  • Grade: UIAA 6- (about 5c) on bergsteigen.com; 5b on Climbers Paradise.
  • Length: 130 m on bergsteigen.com, 100 m on Climbers Paradise.
  • Quickdraws: 12 on bergsteigen.com, 15 on Climbers Paradise.

Billed as probably the best mid-grade multipitch at the Geierwand (UIAA 6/6+, 5 obligatory). It starts with steep, juggy climbing, and the upper pitches are rough pocketed slabs. It can be combined with Alhambra's upper pitches.

Austria · Inntal (Haiming Geierwand)

Alhambra

The longest route on the Geierwand and its most popular easy outing: rough slabs low down, a walk across the big ledge, then steeper, pocketed and more exposed climbing above. The crux is a short traverse to the belay on pitch 10. The last two pitches are scrambling over loose ground.

Austria · Inntal (Haiming Geierwand)

Nebraska

bergsteigen.com calls this the best route on the Geierwand: steep, almost always vertical pocket climbing on the left side of the wall. The hardest move comes on pitch 2, but the upper half stacks several 6b pitches one after another and tires the forearms. Recommended to climbers who are comfortable at 6b.

Austria · Inntal (Haiming Geierwand)

Inntalsynfonie

One of the longer and more popular lines on the Geierwand, at much the same grade as Alhambra but with rather better climbing. Well-featured slabs lead to the big ledge; above it the route continues to mid-height in the upper wall, where a few pitches are brittle but closely bolted. It ends in the middle of the wall and you abseil.

The easiest and one of the most repeated long routes on the Gaeta sea cliff.
