The south face of the Jegihorn seen from the approach path; Alpendurst climbs the middle of the face to the summit

Switzerland · Saas Valley

Alpendurst

Fourteen pitches of steady 4b and 4c on good gneiss that finish at the summit cross of a 3206 m peak, reached from a gondola. It is the best-known plaisir route on the Jegihorn, closely bolted with chained belays, and often climbed in mountain boots as a first long alpine rock route. Expect company: it is very busy in high summer.

The south side of the Aiguille d'Orny above the scree slope of the approach

Switzerland · Orny (Champex, Mont Blanc massif)

La Moquette

Nine pitches up a granite spur and the final tower of the Aiguille d'Orny to a 3150 m summit, on rough, cracked rock with superb friction. Two moves of 5b, the rest 4b and 4c, closely bolted since 2016 and easy enough to climb in boots. The three steep pitches on the summit tower are the highlight.

5b9 pitches250 m

The Amptrax sector of Frontales, El Chorro

Spain · El Chorro

Lluvia de Asteroides

An airy, exposed adventure on clean, solid rock: the best long easy route on the Frontales and an ideal first big multipitch.

5+8 pitches251 m

Hand-drawn sketch topo of Orage d'étoiles, Ailefroide

France · Ailefroide

Orage d'étoiles

One of the best-known slab routes at Ailefroide: eleven pitches up the big inclined plane on the foothills of the Pelvoux, directly above the village. The style never changes, slab from bottom to top, mostly 5b with two pitches of 5c. The approach gully, damaged by a rockfall in 2013, is the serious part of the day.

The Palavar slabs above Ailefroide; Palavar-les-Flots follows the leaning pillar on the left

France · Ailefroide

Palavar-les-Flots

Ailefroide's best-known easy long route: a consistent run of 4th-grade slab and pillar climbing with two harder steps (5b+ on L4, a 5c friction move on L8). It is very popular, so start early.

5c12 pitches310 m

The Parete Zebrata (Placche Zebrate) above Dro, with the lines of three other routes at its left end marked

Italy · Arco & Valle del Sarca

Rita

This is the archetypal long, easy Arco slab, first climbed in 1971. It wanders up the lower bands and then improves into a superb water-worn chimney system in the upper half. It is very polished and very busy, so start early. Original grade 6- UIAA per bergsteigen.com; gulliver gives 5c max.

Topo of Sendero Límite on the south face of Peña Rueba (Mallo Común)

Spain · Riglos & Agüero (Mallos)

Sendero Límite

A long beginner's big route on good conglomerate at a moderate angle. Pitches can be linked in pairs with a 60 m rope. A four-pitch headwall with a couple of panzas finishes high above the Gállego valley.

5c14 pitches375 m

The sea cliff of Montagna Spaccata seen from the beach at Gaeta

Italy · Gaeta & Sperlonga

Via dello Spigolo

This was the second route on Montagna Spaccata and is the cliff's classic moderate. It's never hard but never trivial, with continuous exposure above the sea: a horizontal crack traverse, an athletic juggy chimney and corners. Gulliver gives UIAA grades V–V+ / IV+–V / V+ / V / V–IV+ (5c max), converted here.

The cliff above the Grande Grotta: 3 Stripes starts on the second-to-last spur on the left and finishes up the shaded wall

Greece · Kalymnos & Telendos

3 Stripes

Kalymnos's best-known introduction to multi-pitch: a series of steps and slabs, always with plenty of holds, finishing on top of the Grande Grotta. The upper pitches feel very exposed. Real pitch lengths are shorter than the guidebook says (20–25 m).

Hand-drawn topo of Diretta al Banano (direct finish), Corma di Machaby

Italy · Aosta Valley

Diretta al Banano

Along with Bucce d'Arancia this is the Paretone's other great classic (first ascent 1977, later retro-bolted). It climbs big, juggy, non-athletic slabs on beautiful rock up the centre of the wall to near the summit. Expect a few metres above the last bolt in places.

Topo of Mignonette on the Kokkinovrachos pillar, Leonidio

Greece · Leonidio & Kyparissi

Mignonette

The easiest multi-pitch on Kokkinovrachos, following the easy-angled arête and pillar above Leonidio, with tufas, crimpy walls and a great view of the town. Rock is good apart from the scrappy P2–P3.

5c+7 pitches175 m

Routes on the south face of the Tête de la Maye; Pujolidal is the green line (number 11)

France · La Bérarde (Écrins)

Pujolidal

The great classic of the Tête de la Maye: 13 pitches of rounded granite slab above La Bérarde with nothing athletic until the last hard pitch, a flake and wide crack of 5c+ that everyone remembers. Recently rebolted and very closely protected. It is camptocamp's reference route for the overall grade D.

5c+13 pitches350 m

The Miroir d'Argentine seen from Solalex

Switzerland · Vaud Alps

Remix

The bolted way up the Miroir d'Argentine: fourteen pitches of compact limestone slab, with the difficulties in the first four pitches and long, easy, run-out friction above. A big day out at a modest grade with a mountain walk-off. Do not underestimate it.

The Amptrax wall on Frontales, El Chorro

Spain · El Chorro

Amptrax

The absolute El Chorro classic: a physical, sustained line that feels tough for the grade, with a 6a traverse right under the roof. Polished in places from heavy traffic.

6a9 pitches182 m

Topo of Bucce d'Arancia on the Corma di Machaby, Arnad

Italy · Aosta Valley

Bucce d'Arancia

This is the most-climbed route on the Paretone. It gives sustained, varied slab and crack climbing on good gneiss, and the hardest moves are a fine crack on P2, a slanting corner and a punchy wall. Queues are common on good days. The Mani Nude guidebook grades it stiffly; camptocamp's Italian page calls it sustained at 5b–5c+ with a single 6a.

The Adamelo spur on Mallo Pisón, Riglos

Spain · Riglos & Agüero (Mallos)

Espolón del Adamelo

This is the gentlest way to sample Riglos. Polished pockets and two bulging 'panzas' lead to a 6a crux that can be pulled through on the bolts (A0). The upper spur is easy, and the Pisón towers loom close by.

Italy · Val d'Ossola

Il Cammino del Sole

Twelve long pitches of sunny gneiss slab above Oira, mostly 4c to 5b+ with two 6a pitches: a thin slab at the start and an athletic corner on pitch 10. Pitches are up to 55 m. A winter-sun route with a summit book and plaques at both ends.

6a12 pitches530 m

The Ilinac wall above the Cetina near Omiš; Rambo climbs the centre of the face

Croatia · Omiš

Rambo

Omiš's signature moderate: long, slabby pitches on knobbly grey limestone with big views over the Cetina mouth and the Adriatic. The crux is a short crack on the final pitch.

6a6 pitches230 m

Overview of the Salü Jan sector on the Pfadflue, Gastlosen

Switzerland · Gastlosen

Salü Jan

One of the busiest routes in the Gastlosen: homogeneous, technical climbing on beautiful fluted slabs (cannelures) that dry fast. The top third is broken by grassy ledges.

6a12 pitches380 m

Topo of Wild Country, left of the Crescendo cave, Telendos south face

Greece · Kalymnos & Telendos

Wild Country

A sustained, varied line on sculpted limestone. It starts with an easy slab and builds to slightly overhanging jugs with huge exposure on the top pitch. Mountain Project and camptocamp grade the crux 6a+ (Rockfax says 6a). With a 70 m rope you can link several pairs of pitches.

6a9 pitches265 m

Topo of Wings for Life, right of the Crescendo cave, Telendos south face

Greece · Kalymnos & Telendos

Wings for Life

The first route on the wall (Odermatt and Keller, 2008), climbing a long, exposed line on sharp, grippy rock right of the huge roof. The lower pitches are easy for the grade. The two 6a cruxes are a short odd corner over a small roof and a traverse high up, and they come with big exposure. Pitches are short, so you can link them with long draws.

6a11 pitches250 m

The Hannibalturm above the Sidelen glacier, Furka

Switzerland · Furka

Conquest of Paradise

The classic of the Hannibalturm: six short, wandering pitches of slab, quartz veins, cracks and a 6a+ slab crux on perfect high-mountain granite at 2800 m. A bench and a bus-stop sign wait on the summit. Very popular, so expect company.

6a+6 pitches180 m

West side of the Gorros sector, Montserrat

Spain · Montserrat

Integral d'en Pitu i la Nuri

A modern linkup over two pinnacles on excellent conglomerate. Overhanging 6a and 6a+ walls alternate with easy 'potato-field' slabs. The new bolting makes it one of the most reassuring long lines in the massif.

6a+5 pitches185 m

Photo-topo of La Classique on the Pilier du Couchant, Todra Gorge, with belays marked

Morocco · Todra Gorge (Todgha)

La Classique

The classic of the gorge, first climbed in 1977. Sustained and physical 6a climbing up cracks, corners and short bulges on the big pillar at the gorge entrance. The first pitch is the 6a+ crux, straight off the ground. Watch for loose blocks on the last pitch, shared with Chibania.
