Sant Llorenç de Montgai & Mont-roig

A cluster of short multipitch walls in the Noguera district of Lleida, around the reservoir of Sant Llorenç de Montgai and along the Serra de Mont-roig above Camarasa and Balaguer. Sant Llorenç offers Riglos-style conglomerate (El Cilindre) next to grey limestone (Paret de l'Ós, La Formiguera), while the Pala Alta of Mont-roig is a long band of ochre and grey limestone at about 950 m. Base yourself in Sant Llorenç de Montgai, where the village bar sells the local topos and there is an inn, or in Balaguer; you need a car, coming from Lleida or over the Terradets defile from the Pyrenees. The walls face south and south-east, so autumn, winter and spring are the seasons; summer is too hot except in the shade late in the day.

El Cilindre at Sant Llorenç de Montgai seen from the road; La Directa climbs the conglomerate tower

Spain · Sant Llorenç de Montgai & Mont-roig

La Directa

The classic of the Cilindre, a short Riglos in miniature: four steep, continuous pitches on big pebbles and pockets in sound conglomerate, with a polished crack-corner to start. The 6b second pitch is a long, slightly overhanging pull. Grades are considered generous for the style.

The Pala Alta of Mont-roig; Brothers Ruiz takes the slabs right of the big red roofs

Spain · Sant Llorenç de Montgai & Mont-roig

Brothers Ruiz

A popular easy classic on the Pala Alta: four pitches on beautifully sculpted grey and ochre limestone, with long traverses in the middle and a steep, airy last pitch on big holds. The bolts are close throughout, which makes it a good first multipitch on rock that still feels big.
