The Serra de Comiols is a pre-Pyrenean ridge on the border of the Noguera and the Pallars Jussà (Lleida), between the Conca de Tremp and the Segre valley; the road from Artesa de Segre to Tremp crosses it at the Coll de Comiols (about 1,100 m). Below the pass, the west-facing cliffs of the Roc de Benavent rise above the village of Benavent de la Conca, in the municipality of Isona i Conca Dellà; the rock is a steep grey and reddish conglomerate, and the cliffs are home to a vulture colony. Benavent is a small village with a stop on the Barcelona–La Pobla de Segur bus line (one bus a day each way), but a car is far more practical. Climbing on the Benavent face is banned from 15 February to 1 September, which leaves autumn and early winter, on sunny afternoons, as the season.
